He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, is currently board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and has been in practice 22 years. He also works in the Exploration Medical Capabilities division as a research scientist at NASA. He has many years of experience working in global health as a volunteer during natural disasters, refugee situations, and disease outbreaks. He is the chief medical officer for Hepatitis B Free, an Australian based NGO, dedicated to treating and eradicating hepatitis in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Prior to medical school he served as a Marine Corps aviator, retiring as a colonel, and served as a NASA astronaut on four space shuttle missions.
