Summary

  • I am a Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Public Health at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and am an expert in the field of nutrition and cancer as well as in obesity, and age-related chronic diseases. I am also the Founding Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and founding Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition in the UCLA Department of Medicine. I have published over 250 research papers and numerous professional texts. Most recently I co-edited Nutritional Oncology with Dr. Zhaoping Li and Dr. Bill Go (CRC Press, 2020), I also published books for the public which were national bestsellers including What Color Is Your Diet? (Harper –Collins, 2001) emphasizing color in getting diverse phytonutrients into the diet, and The LA Shape Diet (Harper –Collins 2005) both of which have been translated into multiple languages internationally. I am board-certified in Internal Medicine, and Endocrinology and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine and I am a certified Physician Nutrition Specialist. I earned my MD at Harvard Medical School in 1973, and my Ph.D. in Physiology in 1977 at the University of California, Los Angeles. My primary areas of research are the role of nutrition, phytonutrients, and botanical dietary supplements in the prevention and treatment of common forms of cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
