Summary
- Since my graduation from Duke Medical School in 1968, I have had a 40-year career in Medicine, Academia, Scientific Research, and as a Biomedical Business Executive.
After graduating from Duke, I went on to serve (and train) on the Osler Service at Johns Hopkins and, thereafter, as a Staff Associate at the NIH.
In 1971, I was appointed to the Harvard Medical School Faculty where I served and taught Medical Students and postdoctoral trainees until 1976. After my tenure at Harvard, I moved to La Jolla, CA to Chair The Department of Cellular Immunology at The Scripps Research Institute.
My biomedical research in Immunology and Allergy enabled me, and my colleagues, to publish 346 scientific papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. I have also written and/or edited seven scientific textbooks in my field, and obtained 145 invention Patents in the U.S. & abroad (including the Home Pregnancy test and ABREVA for herpes treatment)
Based on my inventions, I have founded, and directly managed (as CEO), three public biomedical companies and a basic biomedical research institute.
Since 1971, I have hired and managed over 1,100 employees in various Academic Departments at Harvard and Scripps, and in the various biomedical Companies that I founded in La Jolla, CA.
During my career, I have delivered nearly a thousand invited lectures as Visiting Professor or Invited Lecturer to Academic Institutions and to a variety of Biomedical Business Forums and Scientific Meetings in the U.S. and Abroad.
I have also served as a Director on the Boards of eight (8) corporate organizations, ranging from non-profit organizations (such as The Leukemia Society of America) to for-profit companies (including Biomedical companies and Banking Institutions).
Now, at age 71, I am currently semi-retired, but I continue to actively participate in medical treatment of patients and to serve as a consultant to the Federal government and to biomedical and pharmaceutical companies.
