Summary

  • Fellowship trained in pediatric and cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Experience in both academic and private practice settings. Past and present medical appointments in the United States, New Zealand, and Ethiopia.


    Initiated several new, at the time, clinical programs including anesthesia for MRI/CT, sedation for pediatric oncology procedures, hospital-wide sedation policy. Developed anesthetic protocols for lung volume reduction surgery, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, pediatric transplantation, and pediatric spine surgery.


    Leadership positions include Director of Pediatric Anesthesia UCSD, Chief Cardiothoracic Anesthesia UCSD, Director of Anesthesia for Pediatric Transplantation UCSD and RCHSD, Assistant Medical Director of Operating Room Services at UCSD, Chief of Anesthesiology RCHSD, Chief Anesthesia Spine Service RCHSD.


    Unusual accomplishments include teaching the administration of ether anesthesia, directed the anesthesia for open-heart surgery on an orangutan, anesthesia for artificial insemination of a panda bear, separation of two different pairs of omphalopagus twins, and anesthesia for palliative caval-pulmonary shunts on a third pair of thoracopagus twins.



    I have reviewed publications for medical journals, served as the president of a non-profit foundation, participated in charitable medical trips, served as an ABA oral board examiner, provided expert witness services, and served on the Board of Directors of a local youth hockey club.


    My most important accomplishment is getting my wonderful family to put up with me.
