Summary
- David W. Brandes, MS, MD, FAAN, FASA, received his master’s degree in biochemistry and his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and VA Wadsworth Hospital, West Los Angeles. He also completed his internship and neurology residency training at UCLA. In 1972-73, he was the first Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Fellow in the United States, a position sponsored by the National MS Society. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA until moving to Knoxville, TN in 2008. He has served as a Clinical Instructor at South College in Knoxville, TN, since 2013.
Dr. Brandes is a board-certified neurologist and has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, as well as a Fellow of the American Stroke Association. He is also an MS Certified Specialist by the Consortium of MS Centers. In 1977 he started his neurology private practice in Northridge, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, where he was the founder of the Northridge Neurological Center. In 1996, he was the founder/Director of the Northridge Multiple Sclerosis Center where he cared for over 1000 active patients with MS. In 2008 he moved to Knoxville, TN, where he currently practices at the Hope Neurology/MS Center with about 2000 active MS patients
In California he was also the Director of the Northridge Hospital Sleep Evaluation Center and Rest Analysis, a sleep disorders center in Garden Grove, California.
Dr. Brandes has been involved in a variety of MS research projects including immunosuppressive treatment, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, glatiramer acetate studies, beta-interferon studies, sleep disorders in MS and medication adherence. He lectures throughout the United States, as well as internationally, about the treatment of multiple sclerosis. He has authored 25 articles about multiple sclerosis research and treatment in peer-reviewed medical journals.
