- Conrad L. Epting, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology, Northwestern University, and an attending Pediatric and Cardiac ICU physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie CHildren’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Epting directs the Heart Center Cardiac Biorepository, the INVEST program (INnovation in Ventricular failure, Stem cells, and Translational research), and the Fontan Futures initiative.. Dr. Epting serves as the Associate Program Director for Research in the Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship.
While an undergraduate at the University of Iowa, Dr. Epting studied neurogenesis and cell signaling with Dr. Steven Green as he completed a degree in the Biological Sciences. He completed his medical training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, did his Pediatric residency at the University of Colorado and Denver Children’s Hospital, and, pursued fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of California, San Francisco and Children’s Hospital of Oakland. At UCSF, he was a fellow at the Cardiovascular research institution from 2000-2004, and went on to complete postdoctoral training in skeletal myogenesis with Dr. Harold Bernstein.
He transitioned on the faculty at UCSF between 2004-2007, and was subsequently recruited to Northwestern University. His independent academic work between 2007-2012 centered around myocardial targeting by pathogens, specifically Trypanosoma cruzi, in collaboration with Dr. David Engman, and in 2013 his laboratory shifted to the study of human pediatric heart disease, specifically cardiac stem cells and the regulation of heart failure. Presently he studies the epigenetic modifications regulating stem cell phenotype following exposure to end-stage heart failure.
He has been the recipient of numerous awards and has received funding from the March of Dimes, the NICHD, the Children’s Heart and Mend a Heart Foundations, the Mathews Center for Cellular Therapy, and from multiple other intramural sources.
