Summary

  • The focus of my career has been women’s health. During my two decades of working in Level 1 trauma centers as a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician, I focused on gender-related violence and how to improve the health of those who experienced sexual abuse and intimate partner violence. I wrote California’s clinical guidelines for intimate partner violence, helped design the state’s domestic violence forensic exam protocols and trained thousands of health practitioners as the Domestic Violence lead for a state funded training effort. I completed an MPH and transitioned to lead California’s effort to address rising rates of maternal morbidity and mortality first as a public health medical officer and then as the Deputy Director of Family Health in the California Department of Public Health. I was responsible for more than 700 staff who supported major programs such as WIC, Maternal and Child Health, and Newborn Screening, and advised the Governor on policy and programs relative to maternal, adolescent and child health. I recently retired and have been a consultant to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration in regard to Title V applications, to Penn State and their SAFE-T team to support victims of sexual abuse and to the Lucille Packard Foundation as a policy mentee to future nurse leaders. The second edition of my award winning textbook, Intimate Partner Violence: a Health-Based Perspective, will be published later this year.
