    Dr. Cai is the director of neuromuscular pathology service as UTSW Medical Center, one of the largest muscle and nerve biopsies referring center in the United States and receives biopsies specimens from over 100 institutions over a tri-state area. His own research focuses on the development of novel immunohistochemical tools to improve the diagnostic yield of muscle and nerve biopsies, particularly inflammatory myositis. He also collaborate widely on clinical, translational and basic research projects on neuromuscular related diseases. His recent publications cover topics such as cancer cachexia-induced muscle atrophy, immune-mediated myositis, and muscle protection in Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy. His work has appeared in journals such as Cell Reports, Nature Communications and The Journal of Clinical Investigation, with some articles cited by other publications.
    Dr. Cai is an associate editor for the journal Laboratory Investigation, an editorial board member for Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, and the deputy editor for the neuropathology chapters on the Pathologyoutlines website.
