- Dr. Hughes has nearly 30 years of clinical and leadership experience in hospital medicine, critical care medicine and hospice & palliative medicine, as well as a wealth of experience as a physician leader and educator. Dr. Hughes is also an experienced Medical Director with experience in Utilization Management, Medicare and Medicaid, Long Term Services & Support, and Dual Eligible Special Needs Populations.
Dr. Hughes completed a Graduate Certificate in Health Policy at Thomas Jefferson University's Graduate College of Population Health (GCPH), and was quickly invited to begin teaching at the GCPH, which he has since January, 2013.
Dr. Hughes practiced Hospice & Palliative Medicine with UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute and Family Hospice and Palliative Medicine of Pittsburgh from 2012 through 2017. He certified in HPM in 2012. From 2013-2015, he was Co-Chief Medical Officer for Family Hospice.
Dr, Hughes founded Moral Healthcare, Inc., in 2020, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the US to Universal healthcare using cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, prospect theory and moral philosophy.
Dr. Hughes has been active in organized medicine through the Pennsylvania Medical Society and AMA, SCCM Chapter and others. He has led in patient safety, end of life care, and health reform. He has also worked actively with the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and other organizations advancing patient safety and end of life care. Dr. Hughes has been the Pennsylvania State Director of Doctors for America since its founding and currently serves on the Healthcare for All and Communications Working Groups.
