Summary
- Dr. Barish joined Wake Gastroenterology/Wake Internal Medicine Consultants in Raleigh, NC in 1985 and founded Wake Research Associates (currently M3 Wake Research) that same year. He retired from Wake Gastroenterology in 2018 at which time he joined the faculty of the UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. At UNC, he mentored gastroenterology fellows for a year, until his full retirement in June 2019.
As a practicing gastroenterologist, Dr. Barish treated most GI disorders but had a particular interest in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease. He was active in clinical research throughout his career and authored and co-authored numerous articles regarding GI diseases in various medical journals and books. As of March 2024, there have been more than1500 citations of his journal articles which ranks in the top 10% of citations within the Doximity community. Dr. Barish is also listed as a Top Doctor with US News and World Report, Castle Connolly, Becker's GI and Endoscopy, Guide to Americas Top Physicians and American Registry’s Top 5% of “Most Honored Professionals”. He was also one of the first physicians recognized in the Bridges to Excellence IBD Care Recognition Program, sponsored by the American Gastroenterological Association’s Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute.
Since September 2019, Dr. Barish has been doing eConsults in Gastroenterology through ConferMED, a division of the Moses/Weitzman Health System. These are consultations for rural physicians in the United States who have limited access to specialists.
