He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2003, and completed his residency in Pediatrics between 2003 and 2009 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Nelson served as the Medical Director at Prisma Health Patewood Hospital from 2009 to 2019 before becoming the Division Chief at CHoR at VCU Childrens Pavilion, where he currently practices. He is experienced in pediatric endocrinology and has contributed to several clinical trials related to diabetes in children and adolescents. Dr. Nelson has also published notable work in several medical journals, including Sleep Medicine, American Journal of Physiology. Endocrinology and Metabolism, and The Journal of Biological Chemistry. He was honored as the Pediatrician of the Year in 2012 and received the John P Matthews, Jr, MD Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award in 2009.
