Dr. Brien Smith received his medical degree from Wayne State University (1987) followed by completing a Neurology residency at Henry Ford Hospital (1988-91) and fellowship in EEG/Epilepsy at Indiana University (1991-92). He returned to Henry Ford as a senior staff epileptologist (1992-2010) where he opened two Epilepsy Monitoring Units, served as Medical Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship program director. From 2011-2018, Dr. Smith served as Chair of Neurology, Co-Chair of Neurosciences and VP Neuroscience Service Line at Spectrum Health and Professor at Michigan State University. Dr. Smith completed his MBA at Grand Valley State University as part of the executive leadership development plan at Spectrum Health from 2015-17. He subsequently served as System VP of Neurosciences at OhioHealth and Institutional Official for the OhioHealth Research Institute in Columbus from 2018-2023. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and American Epilepsy Society and has been active in many committees with both organizations. He has also served as the Chair of the Board for the Epilepsy Foundation of America from 2011-13.
