Summary

  • I have lived my career at the intersections of basic science, clinical medicine, public health and human rights; deeply touched by the impact that applied science can have on the health of people living with a highly stigmatizing viral infection. My work has been shaped by the life journeys of the individuals and communities who entrusted me with their health over a 25-year clinical career.

I am currently the Head of Global Medical Directors of ViiV Healthcare, the only pharmaceutical company devoted entirely to HIV and whose mission is to leave no person living with HIV behind. At ViiV, I lead the team of global medical directors- experienced senior clinicians and clinician scientists who support clinical education, medical research and public health initiatives around the world.

Before joining ViiV, I was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, where I oversaw capacity-building programs and coordinated evidence-informed policies with the United Nations and the World Health Organization. This was a period of appreciation of the HIV care continuum, with renewed focus on health barriers and inequities. I am particularly proud to have served on the World Health Organization HIV Clinical Guideline Development Group- when for the first time, antiretroviral treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis were strongly recommended for all people living with or at substantial risk of HIV; guidelines informed by science, but rooted in the principles of health and human rights.

Today, antiretroviral medicines hold the promise of restoring lifespan and wellness to tens of millions of people living with HIV. While there are still unmet needs, our responsibility is to ensure that all people with HIV are supported and sustained access to modern treatments, and in doing so, making AIDS a rare disease.
