Summary

  • Becky Powers is a Board Certified Geriatrician and Internist in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Powers is affiliated with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System’s Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC)—a VA Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine. Additionally Dr. Powers is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio in the Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Medicine. She serves at the Associate Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and the Director of Resident and Medical Student Geriatric Rotations. Her interests are in Education, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, and Age Related Hearing Loss.

Geriatricians, like Dr. Powers, are much more than General Internists for older adults. Geriatricians pursue an extra 1-3 years of training in the aging process. They use their extra knowledge to skillfully manage multiple comorbid diseases, cognitive impairments, functional impairments, polypharmacy and medication complications, and social/behavioral issues in aging. The primary goal of a geriatrician is for patients to maintain independence for as long as possible, and they work closely with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve this goal. A primary tenant of Geriatric Medicine is to take more time with an older adult, and our clinic visits are longer to accommodate the complex needs of our patients. If you or an older loved one is experiencing difficulty or age related decline, please consider consulting with a geriatrician.
