Additionally Dr. Powers is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio in the Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Medicine.   Geriatricians, like Dr. Powers, are much more than General Internists for older adults. Geriatricians pursue an extra 1-3 years of training in the aging process. They use their extra knowledge to skillfully manage multiple comorbid diseases, cognitive impairments, functional impairments, polypharmacy and medication complications, and social/behavioral issues in aging. The primary goal of a geriatrician is for patients to maintain independence for as long as possible, and they work closely with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve this goal. A primary tenant of Geriatric Medicine is to take more time with an older adult, and our clinic visits are longer to accommodate the complex needs of our patients.
