Summary
- Bassem T. Elhassan, MD has been a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo since 2014 and currently a Professor of Orthopedics at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree at the American University of Beirut, completed three years of training in general surgery and one year in Orthopedics surgery at AUB. Dr. Elhassan went on to complete his Residency in Orthopedics at UIC. While at UIC, Chicago, Dr. Elhassan received the Senior Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in May 2000, and also the Robert Ray Award for Research. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and an additional Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at MGH.
Dr. Elhassan started working at the Mayo clinic in summer of 2007. He won the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year award for two consecutive years, and his service has been voted yearly as one of the best rotations for the residents and fellows at the Mayo Clinic. After being on staff at the Mayo clinic for 13 years, he moved to MGH as co-Chief of shoulder surgery and program director of Shoulder Surgery fellowship at MGH since October 2020.
Dr. Elhassan has been innovative in the field of upper extremity surgery and was able to develop numerous Novel procedures (20 new surgical procedures for the shoulder, elbow and wrist) through dedicated anatomic and biomechanical studies. The care and outcome of patients (specifically those with complex shoulder problems) at the Mayo Clinic improved significantly because of these innovations.
Dr. Elhassan has published over 195 peer-reviewed articles and authored 40 book chapters. He has presented at countless meetings both nationally, as well as internationally, and won numerous awards for best abstract, paper, poster video and podium and international Hand and Shoulder and Elbow Societies. He is also recipient of the ASES Traveling Fellowship Exchange Program for 2015
