Summary
- I am an academic physician with subspecialty certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
I hail from the Old World, having moved to the USA from Italy in 1990. My medical training took place at one of Europe's oldest medical schools (Federico II University, in Naples). My specialty training in gynecology at the University of Texas in Houston included classical surgical training as well as a strong introduction to (the then novel) laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. My subspecialty training took place at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the oldest formal Reproductive Endocrinology fellowship program in the world.
I have been practicing in the fields of assisted reproduction (IVF) and reproductive surgery (minimally invasive surgery aimed at fertility preservation) since 1996. Our center for assisted reproduction at BWH is one of the largest in the nation. My surgical team has pioneered the introduction of robotic surgery in endometriosis, fibroids, complex uterine pathology and tubal microsurgery.
I am cross-trained in the European and the American health systems. This fact has granted me a "bird's eye" view of the ethical and social challenges of reproductive technology and surgery, and an enviable network of national and international professional collaborators.
I am fully quadrilingual, and offer evaluation in native language to Spanish, French and Italian-speaking patients. My office also offers free interpreter services for most other languages.
As a Harvard University faculty, my practice style is informed by the constant study of a rapidly evolving scientific field. My first goal is to effectively inform my patients, so as to empower them with the ability to make complex treatment decisions. I consider infertility a major life crisis, that can be successfully resolved in the great majority of cases. Education (always), technology (often) and surgery (rarely) are the tools of my trade.
