Summary
- Retired. My last position as an internal medicine physician was as a hospitalist nocturnist at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee where I practiced medicine for the 27 years of medical working career.
We have a house in New Zealand and were on vacation there when all flights were cancelled because of COVID-19. I turned 70 in February 2020 and retired, staying in New Zealand for nearly 3 years, before returning to Tennessee. While in NZ I renewed my interest in practical engineering as a hobby. My father was an engineering teacher and taught me in high school for 4 years. In 2014 he died at age 94 and left me his small workshop including an engineers lathe. I now have a YouTube channel https://YouTube.com/evan-e-cent with 62 videos, mainly about projects using the lathe. I also assisted with the restoration of a Tangyes stationary steam engine as the Goldmine Experience center in Thames, New Zealand. During lockdown I wrote a free online computer program for doing engineering calculations for the lathe RideTheGearTrain.com.
I have also done the desktop publishing for a 777 page book my wife wrote: Goldrush to the Thames: New Zealand 1867 to 1869, (by Kae Lewis PhD, see KaeLewis.com) and an abridged version. She is now working on at least one more book. She is also writing a blog about our 14 month journey through Africa in 1982 (AfricaOverland82.com). Worked in IVF.
Looking back over the years we have travelled in 55 countries, lived in NZ, UK, Germany, NZ, Miami, Long Island New York, Stanford California, and finally Tric-cities Tennessee and worked or studied in 10 universities around the world.
We were married almost 20 years following our careers in medical research before our son was born. Craig is now over 30, married to Mikaela, and owns a circus school in Johnson City, TN (NightOwlCircusArts.com), and has written software to run the business. Wedding DJ too. During lockdown he started a company making hot sauce (NightOwlSpice.com).
