Summary
- My career has always been fueled by a deep curiosity about the immune system and the ways its dysregulation can give rise to disease. I first encountered the broad spectrum of immune dysfunction in the 1980s, as I witnessed the HIV and asthma epidemics unfold in my hometown of New York City.
Today, Long COVID stands as a striking example of acquired neuroimmune dysregulation, affecting an estimated 7% of the U.S. population. It joins a broader constellation of conditions—ranging from chronic fatigue syndromes triggered by infectious or toxic insults to emerging evidence of neurodevelopmental challenges and heightened environmental sensitivities—particularly in individuals with connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS). For those with hypermobile EDS (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), the absence of clear diagnostic markers for associated conditions such as dysautonomia and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome often leads to years of unrecognized neuroimmune dysfunction and microscopic tissue injury.
In collaboration with Drs. Chip Norris, Cortney Gensemer, and Sunil Patel, the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Institute (EDSI) at the Medical University of South Carolina aspires to be a beacon of innovation in the care of complex, multisystem disorders. Our vision is to provide integrative, patient-centered solutions for those navigating this intricate axis of neuroimmune dysregulation—cutting through the fragmentation of traditional, siloed healthcare.
