Summary
- Dr. Andrew Yeowell initially wanted to be a deep sea diver or an astronaut when he was a child. Once accepted to the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) instructor course, a requirement was to become an EMT. During these night classes, he had an awesome resident teacher who let Drew do some pretty cool, bloody things with patients. He then left the USA for undergraduate school and got an incredible education at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He came back to the US and did research at the Duke Eye Center in NC and finally moved to his forever home in Colorado. Seriously, it was like he was living the lyrics to Rocky Mountain High, by John Denver. After deciding between guiding, marine biology, teaching or medicine he decided to go to medical school. He is somehow now the most senior, experienced (ie oldest) Emergency Medicine specialist in Montrose, CO, his first job out of residency! This didn't surprise his parents, who he told that the mountains near Ouray were one of his favorite places in the world when he was just 12 years old. He graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2000 which was a great collection of kind, caring students and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine from 2000 to 2004 at the University of Michigan, which I wouldn't wish on anyone. Good education, but it sucked, he should've stayed in Colorado. He still plays in the mountains more than he works in the ED. He got roped into being the medical director for: Ouray Mountain Rescue, Ouray EMS and Ouray county public health. He still enjoys teaching med students and residents, but got pretty fried during the Covid pandemic. Drew still looks forward to work and loves his group of ED docs and nurses. But with a 16 year old boy getting ready to leave the nest, he'll probably at least semi retire within the next several years. There are just too many places to explore and he doesn't have much hair left to lose!
