Summary
- My career-long research interests are to eliminate complications from biomedical devices used to support critically ill patients. Current efforts target the elimination of coagulation complications from cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and devices used to support children with heart or lung failure. I am an associate professor with tenure of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health at San Antonio (UTHSA) in the Division of Critical Care and a research physician at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) in the Extracorporeal Life Support and Blood and Coagulation Departments. I have been at UTHSCSA since August 2011 and was a 2012-14 Career Development and Translational Science KL2 Scholar funded by UTHSCSA Clinical Translational Science Award. I am also recipient of the Mentored Patient-oriented Career Development Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) from 2015-2019. I am board certified in Pediatrics and Critical Care and work as a staff member at the Level I Pediatric Trauma and Congenital Cardiac Care Unit at University Hospital, San Antonio, TX. I am also a collaborator research and development agreement (CRADA) partner and research physician at US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) since 2013. I have started and currently manage several laboratory and clinical research projects at UTHSCSA and USAISR. My research is to build upon my long-term experience and skill to define interventions to decrease life-threatening coagulation associated with extracorporeal life support.
