Summary

  • Dr. Carlson is a board certified neurosurgeon specializing in cerebrovascular, endovascular, and complex cranial neurosurgery. He is a native of New Mexico and a graduate of the University of New Mexico Medical School and Neurosurgery residency. Clinically, Dr. Carlson has brought many innovative and cutting edge treatments for stroke, aneurysms, brain tumors, and other complex conditions to New Mexico that previously were only available out of the state. These include procedures such as minimally invasive treatments for brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, new approaches to brain tumors including endonasal surgery, brain bypass surgery, and treatment of facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia). Dr. Carlson is also heavily involved in clinical research related to brain physiology and mechanisms of stroke after trauma, aneurysm rupture, and other life threatening conditions. He has involved UNM in several high profile international trials, giving patients at UNM access to some of the newest approaches to try to improve recovery from severe brain injuries and strokes. Most recently he was the principal investigator (PI) on two grants (Minimally Invasive ECog Monitoring Devices and Targeting spreading depolarization and neurological deficits in chronic subdural hematoma with a combined total over $1.4 million dollars). He has over 60 peer reviewed publications, has authored chapters for several prominent textbooks, and has previously received NIH grant funding to conduct research projects. He was recently elected to the editorial board for the Journal of Neurosurgery, the most highly respected journal in the field of neurosurgery. He is married to Lissa and has three amazing daughters: Laila, Addie, and Ivy Sue. They love traveling around New Mexico, hiking, rock hounding, and skiing.
