Summary
- As general internist and clinical researcher, Dr. Avins has been involved in numerous aspects of observational and interventional research. He is a Senior Research Scientist at the Kaiser Permanente, Northern California (KPNC) Division of Research and maintains active faculty appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. His primary research interests include acute and chronic pain syndromes (with an emphasis on musculoskeletal pain), complementary and integrative medicine, preventive medicine (with an emphasis on the prevention of cardiovascular disease), clinical research methodology and the ethics of clinical research. He has been the Principal Investigator or Co-PI of several federally funded clinical trials and is active in teaching the principles of clinical research both at KPNC and UCSF. In addition, he continues to see patients at the KPNC Oakland Medical Center in the Urgent Care clinic.
