  • Dr. Anastassios Koumbourlis is the Chief of the Division of Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine at Children's National Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics at George Washington University, School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He received his Medical Degree (MD) from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Medicine in his native Greece. He also received a graduate degree (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins University (MPH) in Baltimore, MD. He completed residencies in Preventive Medicine (Johns Hopkings University, Baltimore, MD) and in Pediatrics (St Agnes Hospital also in Baltimore, M). He completed fellowships in Pediatric Pulmonology & in Pediatric Critical Care at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Prior to his current position, he was in the faculty of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University (Assistant & Associate Professor) and of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, NY. His area of expertise is on acute & chronic respiratory failure; chronic lung disease of prematurity; airway reactivity; congenital lung and airway abnormalities; flexible bronchoscopy ; and respiratory complications of non-pulmonary disorders (especially neuromuscular disorders and sickle cell disease).
    He is a member and has held leadership positions in multiple professional organizations including the American Thoracic Society, CHEST, European Respiratory Socety; Aerodigestive Society; International Network of Esophageal Atresia).
    He is an American Thoracic Society Fellow, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians)
