Summary
- Following my psychiatric residency, I served in the Air Force Medical Corps after which I joined the faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Then, in 1977, I joined with six other behavioral health professionals to start and then co-manage a growing psychiatric group practice in Virginia Beach for more than 25 year.
My clinical work has always been based on my training and experience in intensive outpatient psychotherapy, which carried over to all patient-centered activities, including medication management, clinical consultations, and leadership positions in hospital and outpatient settings. My primary professional interests have included individuals with personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychoses.
Starting in the late 1990's, I become increasingly involved in adding high quality professional ideals and skills to managed behavioral healthcare. Following three years in a part-time position with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia, I spent the next six years with Magellan Behavioral Health, serving as TRICARE Medical Director for Behavioral Health in the Mid-Atlantic and Heartland regions.
Since joining Cigna in 2004, I led and actively participated in multiple projects focused on improving services for customers and providers. These efforts included leading improvements in behavioral health medical necessity criteria, working on medical-behavioral integration, and actively training and consulting with clinical staff, as well as interfacing with providers, business leaders, and behavioral health advocacy groups.
Over the years, I've also been active in local non-profit community organizations, including my current position on the Board of Prologue, Inc., a Baltimore-area organization that provides housing and supportive services to individuals with chronic mental illness, other disabilities, and homeless outreach.
