Summary
- I am a general internist in a large multispecialty group in Barrington and Bristol, Rhode Island. Since 1999 I have served as Medical Director at Evergreen House Health Center. I have teaching appointments at Brown and Boston Universities and supervise ward teams at Rhode Island and Roger Williams Hospitals where I am recognized as an entertaining-- and occasionally correct-- diagnostician and teacher.
I have an interest in the use of honey in wound care and in 2012 launched the website honeyointment.org to inform our profession and the general public of its superiority over all the usual antibiotic and silver preparations. My wife Jane Dennison, MD of pediatrics is an ardent beekeeper. She and I speak nationally on the topic and include a practicum including manufacture of 2 oz of honey ointment for home use.
My work at Evergreen, affliliated with Lifecare Centers of America, centers on rehab and hospice type work. With my associate Jenny Cellar, RNP, I pioneered a program to reduce readmissions from Skilled Nursing Facilities to Hospitals. We have devised a powerpoint presentation for hospital conferences, to teach habits for discharging clinicians to adopt to reduce admissions within 30 days. As Medicare has established progressively severe monetary penalties on hospitals for such readmissions, we find ourselves popular speakers. We suggest short courses antibiotics and elimination of proton pump inhibitors to reduce colitis due to clostridium difficle. We suggest discharging unstable cardiopulmonary patients on morphine sulphate concentrate for sublingual administration by nurses for symptomatic relief of episodes of decompensation--very effective and popular. Our 30 day readmission rate dropped from 26 to 13 % in 8 months of 2012. In long term care, I love to teach students to find a folding chair and to enjoy sitting and talking to their patient --but only after checking the cushion to ensure that it is dry to avoid what is known as "LTC Baptism."
