- Dr. Alfonso L. Sabater is a surgeon-scientist and Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute - University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Sabater is the Medical Director of the Ocular Surface Program and Director of the Corneal Innovation Lab at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Research in his laboratory is aimed at investigating strategies for corneal and ocular surface protection and regeneration. Dr. Sabater received his MD from the University of Valencia (Spain), and his PhD from the University of Navarra (Spain). He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Navarra, and both an ocular surface diseases research fellowship and a cornea and external diseases clinical fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (USA). Dr. Sabater has several publications in leading journals and holds multiple patents. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for several scientific journals, and he is currently a Board Member Director of the Pan-American Cornea Society (PanCornea). Dr. Sabater is also the co-founder of three University of Miami spin-off companies focused on developing therapies and devices for patients with corneal and ocular surface diseases.
