Summary
- Dr. Baker earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia before graduating from medical school there in 1989. He completed a residency in internal medicine with a primary care focus at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and then a fellowship in pulmonary diseases and critical care at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care, he has practiced in Lynchburg, Virginia since 1995. He is a certified physician executive and an experienced clinical trialist. He served on the board of directors of Centra from 2001 through 2018 and chaired its committee which governs credentialing, health care quality, staff development, and service excellence. He has a particular interest in how health care systems can be organized to provide care which is consistently safe and of high clinical quality.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Baker volunteers as a Scout leader in the Blue Ridge Mountains Council which serves youth throughout the western part of Virginia and operates the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation. He serves on the Council's Executive Board and was its president 2019-2022, leading the organization during the pandemic and through the bankruptcy of the national organization.
