Originally from Lebanon, Dr. Ayoubi graduated with High Distinction in Chemistry from the American University of Beirut, consistently making the Dean’s Honor List. He was awarded the Dean's Scholarship to attend the NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program at the Medical University of South Carolina, earning both MD and PhD degrees.
Dr. Ayoubi completed his general surgery internship at the Medical University of South Carolina and a postdoctoral research fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. His research in regenerative medicine was presented at major national and international cardiothoracic surgery conferences.
He completed an integrated residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa, where he became board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, followed by an advanced fellowship in cardiopulmonary transplantation, mechanical assist devices, minimally invasive and hybrid procedures, and complex re-operative surgery.
Dr. Ayoubi now serves patients in Iowa and neighboring states, utilizing the latest heart care technologies. He is actively involved in medical education and training, while his basic science research focuses on chronic rejection mechanisms in heart transplantation animal models.
