Program Director of VCU Family Medicine Residency Program

The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is currently recruiting a Family Medicine physician to serve as the Program Director of our new Family Medicine rural training track residency program based in South Hill, Virginia. This residency program will focus on serving the rural community of South Hill, VA as well as the underserved in the urban population in Richmond. Highlights include: 

·         Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is a premier academic medical center located in the heart of Richmond. Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a proud history of training medical students and resident physicians.

·         South Hill is a burgeoning town in rural Virginia about 80 miles southwest of Richmond. VCU Health’s Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a state-of-the-art facility built in 2018 for South Hill and the surrounding areas.

·         As part of the VCU Health system, the VCU-CMH Rural Family Medicine Residency Program is directly supported by the VCU School of Medicine graduate medical education system and VCU’s tertiary academic medical system in nearby Richmond, VA. This infrastructure will provide immense opportunity to positively impact the areas we serve.

·         Our rural family medicine residency program welcomed its first class of three residents in July of 2024 and will build to a 3-3-3 program over the next two years.

·         As a founding core faculty member and Program Director, you will help build this program from the ground up. Responsibilities include providing direction and leadership necessary to maintain the Family Medicine Residency Program with Residency Review Committee Accreditation, ongoing reviews of the residency program as required by RRC and ACGME.

·         The PD will spend a majority of time on residency administration, clinical precepting, and resident education in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The remaining time will be devoted to direct clinical practice. The PD should have clinical expertise to be the faculty lead in multiple care areas such as outpatient, inpatient, care of pregnant women, OB, substance abuse treatment, primary care Point of Care Ultrasound, long term care, inpatient pediatrics, etc.

·         Five years of experience including 3+ years as faculty in a Family Medicine residency training program is required. Prior experience in providing direct patient care and/or family medicine residency training in a rural/underserved setting is highly desired. A passion for teaching is required.
