  • San Mateo Medical Center, part of San Mateo County Health, is seeking one full-time Nurse Practitioner for our Forensic Medical Unit, the Keller Center, beginning immediately. The focus of the provider’s responsibilities will be to perform forensic medical exams for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse and child abuse. The Nurse Practitioner will participate in management of the Keller Center under the supervision of the Medical Director and Clinical Coordinator. Testifying in court will be part of the job responsibilities.

    The Keller Center for Family Violence Intervention is a unique outpatient medical unit affiliated with San Mateo Medical Center Emergency Department. We perform forensic medical exams on victims of assault and abuse and work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team that includes law enforcement, the District Attorney’s office, Child Protective Services, Aging and Adult Services, and several community agencies. We also provide education and serve as a resource for other community hospitals and clinics.

    Job Details may include:

    • Perform forensic medical exams for victims of sexual assault, child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, domestic violence, and elder/dependent abuse.
    • Take complete medical histories and perform complete medical screening exams.
    • Initiate screening and diagnostic procedures according to standardized procedures.
    • Make mandated reports to Law Enforcement, CPS, and APS as required by law.
    • Collect and preserve forensic evidence per California State protocol.
    • Maintain accurate records on the state OES forms.
    • Maintain accurate records of medical assessments, follow-ups, and diagnostic work up evaluations.
    • Evaluate results of clinical findings and laboratory tests.
    • Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals regarding health problems relative to diagnosis and treatment of patients.
    • Refer illnesses and injuries requiring immediate medical attention to the appropriate physician.
    • Counsel patients and family members regarding health maintenance after exposure to a personal assault or abuse.

    The ideal candidate will possess a California license as a Family Nurse Practitioner and national accreditation, Nurse Practitioner Furnishing license, and Pediatric primary care experience. It is not required, but it is preferred that the incumbent will have a Master’s degree in nursing, forensic examination training and experience, Trauma Informed Care training and experience, program management experience and experience in community outreach and education. For candidates with no forensic training, a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) course should be completed within 30 days of hire.
