Summary
- After receiving his MD from Wayne State University (Detroit) and completing general surgery residency at St. John Hospital (Detroit) and colorectal surgery (CRS) residency at St. Vincent Hospital (Erie, PA), he started his career in academia in New York City at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center (Brooklyn) pioneering the use of transrectal U/S for preoperative staging of rectal cancer, guiding neoadjuvant (preoperative) therapy to downstage rectal cancer prior to resection, thus improving outcomes, such as increased disease-free survival (DFS) while avoiding permanent colostomy.
He returned to the Midwest (Kansas City, Detroit) with these advances in the multidisciplinary management of rectal cancer, first in a community practice setting before a return to academia as Professor of Surgery at Ohio State University (OSU)/The James Cancer Hospital. He created the CRS residency program at OSU (granted initial ACGME accreditation in 2016), and served as founding CRS Program Director (2013-2019).
He was recruited to create CRS services at MD Anderson Cancer Center affiliates (Phoenix, New Orleans) before returning to academia in his home state at Central Michigan University.
Dr. Cirocco has served local, regional and national surgical organizations, including 4 as President: Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Southwest Society of CRS, Ohio Valley Society of CRS and the Midwest Surgical Association (MSA). He is past Chair of the ACS Committee on Young Surgeons, now the Young Fellows Association (YFA) and ACS Governor. He serves on the Editorial Board of 3 journals: Techniques in Coloproctology, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Diseases of the Colon and Rectum (DCR) for 20 years. He is a DCR Section Editor (History) and received the 1st ASCRS Victor Fazio Award in 2007 and repeated in 2022. He has served the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS) for 20 years (Written Examination Committee-10 years), and has served as a Senior Examiner.
