Summary
- I am a board certified in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine (CCM), with over 20 years of progressive clinical and administrative experience. I was born in Jamaica W.I. and moved to the USA at age 16 to attended University and Medical School at the State University of New York. After completing my Internal Medicine residency in NY, I moved to Pittsburgh, PA where I trained in Critical Care Medicine & Anesthesiology with a focus on Liver Transplantation for both adult and pediatric patients. Subsequently,
I joined the faculty where I became a Professor (1st Black) also engaged in Pediatric Anesthesiology, at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, with a focus in Pediatric Organ Transplantation and Critical Care Medicine. I am also an Adult Intensivist and care for adult transplant patients in the intensive care units. I was rectified in CCM for the second time as one of the less than 160 Diplomats surprisingly, who has ever sat for the recertification exam. I am also trained in Transesophageal Echocardiography, with 2 book chapter publications.
The past two decades of my career has been spent divided equally between Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine for organ transplantation.I have served on the Medical School’s Admission and Curriculum Committees, from 1993 to 1997, and again from 2006 to the present. In so doing, I worked extensively with Medical Students, Fellows and Residents, mentoring, teaching developing and implementing educational programs in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Most importantly, my work involves being one of the central members of the admissions committee for medical students, who reviews and scrutinizes the applications of the candidates for admission to the medical school, and helping with the recruitment of diversity students. After 28 yrs at UPMC, I move to South Dakota to help start a new program in Liver Transplantation with my colleague, Dr. Jeff Steers of the Mayo Clinic.
