Summary

  • I am a Neurosurgeon and regenerative neuroscientist at Mayo Clinic. My neurosurgical focus includes treatment of brain tumors via open surgical, minimally invasive and stereotactic radiosurgical approaches. My research efforts are focused at the intersection of neuro-oncology and neuro-regeneration helping to bridge the chasm between basic science research and clinical needs. Our current goals include: 1) Improve molecular understanding of radiation-induced brain injury to help restore cognitive function after treatment for brain tumors. 2) Understand the molecular differences between animal models of neurological disease and actual human disease to help develop better pipelines for translational neuroregeneration. 3) Harness biological examples of effective regeneration or neuroprotection to augment endogenous regenerative responses. 4) Develop innovative strategies that are efficient, economical and highly predictive of human therapeutic efficacy to screen candidate therapies. 5) Develop and translate select stem/progenitor cell-based therapies for appropriate indications. 6) Expedite translation by closely integrating scientific and clinical efforts.
