Sylvia is an Orthopedic Surgeon and current Team Physician for Merrimack College Athletics specializing in Minimally Invasive Arthroscopic Surgery, Joint Replacement, and Fracture Fixation involving the knee, shoulder, and ankle. He has a particular focus on sports injuries involving the ACL and other knee ligaments, meniscus tears, cartilage defects, rotator cuff tears, labrum tears, shoulder and patella dislocations/instability, arthritis, and fractures in pediatric, teenage, and adult patients.
Dr. Sylvia attended the University of Michigan on an academic scholarship where he graduated with High Distinction and provided sideline coverage for the Michigan Athletics Department as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). He then received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he graduated with Distinction in Research and received the Dean’s Recognition Award. He was also inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, selected by his classmates as someone they would want to treat their own family members. He went on to complete his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and received the Henry H. Banks Outstanding Chief Resident Award, as well as the Outstanding Orthopedic Resident Research Award. He was also awarded the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Resident Scholarship.
Following his time in Boston, Dr. Sylvia pursued a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at The University of Colorado where he served as a Team Physician for the NBA Champion Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, Colorado Mammoth, and University of Colorado Football and Basketball. Dr. Sylvia currently serves as a Reviewer for multiple journals and is a member of AOSSM, AANA, ASES, AAOS, NEOS, and ISAKOS. He has over 50 publications and presentations at national and international meetings and his work has been featured in numerous orthopedic journals, as well as The New York Times.
