  • Nelson Leung, M.D., is a consultant in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, with a joint appointment in the Division of Hematology. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2000 and holds the academic rank of professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Leung is recognized with the distinction of the David L. and Colleen B. Kessenich Professorship in Multiple Myeloma.
    Dr. Leung earned his B.S. in combined sciences at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, and his M.D. at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He completed his internship in internal medicine at University of Iowa and continued his training at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, where he completed an internal medicine residency as well as a residency and fellowship in nephrology.
    Dr. Leung is interested in kidney diseases caused by monoclonal gammopathy. Due to improvements in the detection of monoclonal proteins, the number of kidney diseases associated with monoclonal gammopathy has increased. The disease he is most interested in is monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance, a condition that is now recognized by the World Health Organization as a group of hematologic disorders that result in kidney injury. He also studies kidney injury in patients with multiple myeloma and immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis, which is caused by the overproduction of immunoglobulin light chains that form amyloid fibrils. In particular, Dr. Leung's work revolves around improving current diagnostic techniques and redefining response criteria in these patients.
    Dr. Leung has given invited presentations and held visiting professorships both nationally and internationally, and he has authored or co-authored over 500 journal articles, as well as abstracts and book chapters.
