Summary
- Dr. Michael Hughes is a general surgeon in Louisville, KY that specializes in the management of gastroparesis and other foregut diseases. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Wake Forest University. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Virginia and transplant surgery training at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Hughes joined the University of Louisville as Director of Pancreas Transplantation in 2010. He started and became Director of the Total Pancreatectomy-Islet Autotransplant Program in 2015 with nearly $1 million from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence. To better manage his diabetic transplant patients with gastroparesis, he started placing Enterra gastric stimulators. Through collaboration with gastroenterologist Dr. Thomas Abell, MD, he expanded Enterra therapy to non-transplant patients and rapidly became the most experienced gastroparesis surgeon world-wide.
Dr. Hughes founded Vanguard Surgical to focus on the medical and surgical management of gastroparesis and chronic pancreatitis patients. He has placed more gastric stimulators than any surgeon world-wide (more than 2,000) and has performed more than 1,500 pyloroplasties for gastroparesis. He performs both as laparoscopic, outpatient procedures. With both gastric stimulation and pyloroplasty as options, surgical jejunostomy feeding tubes are rarely necessary.
Patient travel from across the United States to seek care with Dr. Hughes, centrally located in Louisville, KY and New Albany, IN.
