Dr. Vega is a neurologist and research scientist with more than two decades of experience providing inpatient care for a broad spectrum of neurological conditions ranging from acute stroke to initial presentations of rare autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. He also investigates the clinical, pathological and therapeutic implications of the human diving response (i.e., the mammalian diving response) in various neurological conditions, including sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), in which single epileptic seizures cause sudden death in often perfectly healthy persons with epilepsy. An offshoot from this aspect of his work focuses on the potential role of white blood cell counts after seizures in the stratification of SUDEP risk. In 2024 he published an article which proposes the addition of sudden unexpected atraumatic arterial dissection-related death after seizure (SUADAS) to the spectrum of mechanisms by which epileptic seizures cause sudden death. In addition to the above, Dr. Vega also founded and currently directs TLNeuro, a telemedicine company that seeks to improve the care of neurological patients in Colombian emergency departments and hospitals. Aside from English Dr. Vega speaks Spanish and Italian. He has more than 30 publications and over 500 citations in Scientific Journals.
