- Dr. Julia Frank, MD, DLFAPA, is an emeritus professor of psychiatry at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she served for decades as director of medical student education in psychiatry. She completed her psychiatry residency at Yale-New Haven Medical Center in 1981, following an internship in internal medicine at Michael Reese Hospital. She holds a medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine and a certificate in Medical Education from George Washington University.
The daughter of Jerome D. Frank, she was the coauthor of the third edition of his landmark text Persuasion and Healing: A Comparative Study of Psychotherapy (Johns Hopkins Press 1991) and is co-author, with Bruce Wampold, PHD, of the fourth edition of this work (2025). She is also a co-editor and mutlple chapter author of The Behavioral Sciences and Health care, 3rd and 4th editions, Hogrefe 2012. Her multiple areas of interest include women's reproductive mental health, psychotherapy for the medically ill, disaster psychiatry, medical education, and the history of medicine. She was named Psychiatrist of the Year by the Washington Psychiatric Society in 2005 for coordinating a response to survivors of Hurricane Katrina and later received the Bruno Lima award for disaster psychiatry of the APA. Other awards include a Master Teacher award and a Distinguished Service Award from George Washington University and the mentor of the year award from Medical Students for Choice.
