- Dr. Thawani completed his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, College of Engineering, and earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School. While at Michigan, he was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) / National Institutes of Health (NIH) research fellowship and graduated with Honors. He went on to complete his Neurosurgical training and Chief Residency at the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Neurosurgery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He subsequently completed an advanced Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas - focusing on complex surgical treatment of brain, skull base, pituitary, and spinal tumors. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Thawani is a general Neurosurgeon who provides most types of neurosurgical care, including conditions affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. In addition, he has a special interest and fellowship training in treating patients with cancer and benign tumors affecting the nervous system. As a surgeon, he utilizes minimally-invasive, image-guided surgical modalities to perform safe surgery only when it is necessary.
Dr. Thawani is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
