Summary
- I received my MD degree from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid (Spain) and my PhD in Cellular Biology by the Universidad de Navarra (Spain). I completed my residency-training program in Anatomic Pathology in the Clinica Universitaria de Navarra, Pamplona (Spain), and repeated an Anatomic Pathology residency in the United States at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX). I worked as a Surgical Pathologist in the Department of Pathology of the Hospital de Orense (Galicia, Spain) from January 1998 to November 1999. I completed a fellowship in Hematopathology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC; Houston) in 2005. I am board certified in Anatomic Pathology, and in the subspecialty of Hematopathology, by the American Board of Pathology. I have been Associate Professor with the award of tenure and Chief of the Lymphoma Section at the Department of Hematopathology at MDACC until August 2013. I moved to the University of Miami (UM)/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to be the Director of the Division of Hematopathology in September 2013. Since then, I have done diagnostic signout in hematopathology and lead a research laboratory investigating signaling pathways that can be useful for targeted therapy in lymphoma.
My patient care activities center around the diagnosis of specimens obtained from patients being evaluated for leukemia, lymphoma and/or plasma cell myeloma. I interpret bone marrow core biopsy and aspirate specimens; lymph node and tissue biopsies; immunophenotypic analyses, including immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry; and peripheral blood smears. I act as a consultant to the surgical pathology services and to other members of the Division of Hematopathology as well as colleagues from other institutions and clinical groups.
