  • Dr. Scholer is a board-certified surgical oncologist and hepatobiliary surgeon with a distinguished career in academic surgery, multidisciplinary cancer care, and surgical quality improvement. Prior to joining Hackensack Meridian Health Southern Region, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.

    His clinical expertise includes the surgical management of pancreatic, liver, bile duct, and gallbladder cancers (hepatobiliary); gastric, small bowel, and colorectal malignancies (gastrointestinal); melanoma, sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumors; and peritoneal surface malignancies. He offers advanced therapeutic interventions including hepatic arterial infusion, cytoreductive surgery with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and palliative or debulking procedures for symptom control in advanced malignancies. He is committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to the unique needs of each patient and their family

    Nationally, Dr. Scholer contributes to surgical education and policy through leadership roles with the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (Education & Training Committee), Society of Surgical Oncology (SCORE Committee), American Board of Surgery (Complex Surgical Oncology Fellowship Editorial Board), and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (Physician Liaison).

    His research focuses on clinical trial development, patient-reported outcomes, quality improvement, and translational science. His current work emphasizes prehabilitation and optimizing frail cancer patients to better tolerate multimodality therapy and reduce perioperative risk. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, presented nationally, and received multiple accolades. He is also deeply committed to mentorship, serving as a research advisor to medical students, residents, and fellows.
