Summary
- I am a Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a collaborator of the McKnight Institute for Brain Research. My work focuses on aging and the intersection of sleep disorders, cerebrovascular disease, and neurocognitive aging in large-scale population studies.
Since 2010, I have been an investigator with the Northern Manhattan Study and the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). I served as the Miami site principal investigator (PI) for the ancillary sleep study Sueño (R01HL098297), which examined the prevalence of abnormal sleep patterns in 2,200 Latinos using actigraphy. Additionally, I led an HCHS/SOL ancillary study evaluating the impact of sleep apnea and actigraphic sleep duration on cerebral hemodynamics in 98 participants using transcranial Doppler ultrasound.
This work led to a five-year, $13 million R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging to study how obstructive sleep apnea and nocturnal blood pressure influence the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in Hispanic/Latino adults. The project, titled Sleep in Neurocognitive Aging and Alzheimer’s Research, represents a significant step in understanding sleep-related risk factors for cognitive decline.
I am a Fellow of the C-Change Institute on Leadership and Mentorship at Brandeis University. I previously chaired the Young Investigator Research Forum for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation (AASMF) and founded the yearlong Sleep Research Fellowship Committee (SOAR program) for the AASMF.
I serve on the editorial boards of CHEST, published by the American College of Chest Physicians, and Brain & Life Magazine, the official publication of the American Academy of Neurology. Additionally, I am a member of the Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board for NHLBI.
