Summary
- Dr. A. Holterman, Professor Emerita of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, is a pediatric surgeon and a surgeon scientist. She attended Texas Christian University; pursued training for Medicine, Biomedical research, Surgery and Pediatric Surgery at the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical School, the University of Virginia Health System, the U of Montreal and the U of Washington in Seattle. She belongs to academic societies including the American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Her research interests on the liver epithelial cells gene regulation and function were funded by NIH grants. She has translational research projects with clinical trials targeting obesity in severely obese adolescents, pediatric cholestatic liver diseases in the US, Asia and India. She has developed and implemented a course in interprofessional team-based initial assessment and management of pediatric surgical emergencies, targeting low resources health care facilities lacking in pediatric surgical expertise to enhance pediatric life-threatening illnesses and injuries. She is a founder member of a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization IPSAC-VN (International Pediatric Specialist Alliance for the Children of Vietnam) which engages in surgical capacity building, training and education, and research collaborations with major children’s hospitals in Vietnam. She also founded Prometheus, USA, a non profit organization devoted to the discovery, development and deployment of solutions to improve children’s health around the world in low- and middle-income countries LMIC by fostering and supporting innovative medical education, training, and research, and by narrowing these gaps in under resourced sites. She is actively engaged in Global Health, mentoring, research and clinical surgery.
