Job Highlights

  • Opportunity to Give Back to an Underserved Community
  • The California HEAL Program is looking for it's inaugural class of US-trained physicians passionate about health equity in California and looking for mentorship and training post-residency to grow their skills and network to best serve the underserved.

    • The 1-year fellowship immerses you in partner clinics and organizations getting to the root cause of the major health problems of California’s resource-denied communities.
    • You will receive tailored mentorship from UC faculty and local clinical health experts who are values-aligned, passionate about health equity, and invested in helping shape your career path addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
    • You will spend 70% of your time working clinically and 30% paid protected time to focus on work addressing prominent structural determinants of health needs of the local communities such as addiction medicine and refugee care.
    • To provide you with the tools and framework to best serve the communities you’re immersed in, you’ll receive intensive training and curriculum on health equity, structural determinants of health, and leadership.
    • From public health researchers in Mexico to physicians in the Navajo Nation, when you join the California HEAL program, you have access to HEAL’s engaged community of 200+ diverse healthcare specialists for support and collaboration opportunities.
    • After program completion you'll have the opportunity to attend an international training.
    • A possible faculty track at a University of California campus post-fellowship.

Fellow placement options include San Diego, CA, Fresno/Central Valley, CA and Riverside, CA. Our first California HEAL Cohort launches July 2025 and the priority application deadline is September 30th, 2024.

Who should apply: All career stages are welcome, though the program is primarily built for physicians finishing up residency and early career physicians ready to kick-start their career in serving resource-denied communities. The program is also for mid-career professionals feeling burnout and overworked and could benefit from our offerings to reignite the passion of why they went into medicine.
