    Description

    Stony Brook University is the premier academic medical center in Suffolk County, New York. The University Hospital offers the community state-of-the-art care including for patients presenting with acute psychiatric problems. Services include the only Suffolk County Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP).

    The NP will conduct psychiatric evaluations/assessments, psychopharmacological and no-pharmacological interventions, and level-of care recommendations for individuals presenting in the emergency department units with psychiatric co-morbidity.

    The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will involve families and obtain collateral history as needed for accurate assessments. NP will collaborate with ED, CPEP, Adult Inpatient & Consultation Liaison physicians as well as ED nurses, social workers and counselors in screening, intervention, referrals to treatment and general discharge planning. NP will also provide education to staff and trainees.

    Common conditions addressed may include but are not limited to delirium, behavioral symptoms associated with dementia, impairments in capacity for medical decisions making, depression and anxiety, elevated suicide risk, and substance use disorders.

    Schedule: Full-Time. (4) 10-hour shifts weekly.

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Applicants must have the below credentials or have them in possession by the start date.

    Nurse Practitioner: Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nursing. Nurse Practitioner Certification in Psychiatry. Valid New York State license as a Nurse Practitioner.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Nurse Physician: Three years’ experience as a nurse practitioner. Two years or more of psychiatry experience. Clinical experience as a provider in an acute psychiatric setting and /or consultation and liaison psychiatry role, teaching experience. Clinical experience in de-escalation techniques.

    Required Qualifications:

    • ANCC Board Certification.
    • New York State PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) License.
    • Master’s degree in Nursing.
    • Valid New York State license as a Nurse Practitioner.
    • Acute Hospital Psychiatry Experience.
    • 3 or more years of experience as a psychiatric NP.
